Places to See in Sutherland - Northern Cape South Africa

Sutherland may be famous as one of the coldest places in South Africa, but it is also home to some spectacular historical sites as well as a Planetary Observatory.

Dutch Reformed Church:

The N G Church was designed by Charles Freeman who also designed the Dutch Reformed church of Graaff Reinet and the Standard Bank in Cape Town . During the Anglo Boer War, the church was invaded for 8 months by the British troops. Filled to capacity, it can seat 1200 people.

Tuinplaas Church:

When the farmers move their sheep from the cold Roggeveld area down to the Karoo , they have a communal once a year at the Tuinplaas Church 55 km out on the Matjiesfontein route.

Louw Museum:

The two very famous Afrikaans poets and writers N P van Wyk Louw and W E G Louw were born in this very same house. Together they achieved 6 Hertzog prices for literacy. Several other interesting displays are also to be seen at the Louw Museum.

Road to the Stars:

Plinths for the nine planets of the solar system were built to scale in the main road or Planetarium Highway, representing the size of the sun in comparison to the size of the planets and also the distance between the planets. Craftsman of the local community dressed the stonework.

English Cemetary:

The most interesting grave in the English Cemetery is that of a soldier drowned in a flash flood. He was given a communal burial and after the war the British government sent a military cross and a second grave was made. The soldier was thus buried twice. The Jewish Cemetery is also worth visiting.

Sutherland and the surrounding areas offer a lot of unusual places, scenes and events to entertain and amaze any traveller.

18 km out of town, one can enjoy the site of the seven telescopes of the Observatory, one being "SALT" (Southern African Large Telescope) which has the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. With this telescope one is able to see a candle flame on the moon. It has a mirror diameter of 11 metres.

Ouberg Pass has a lovely lookout post on the escarpment of the Roggeveld mountains 45 km out of town in a westerly direction. One is able to see the Ceres Karoo mountains about 200 km away.

Fransplaas Sheep Cheese (quite a name!) is the only sheep cheese farm in the country about 50 km out of town in the Calvinia direction. Sheep cheese is definately an acquired taste - be bold and do as the Aussies do!

The Koornlandskloof Tulips flower at the end of September, an interesting site filled with colour and worth visiting. Hiking and biking trails are also available with ample clean, cheap lodging.

Skurweberg, Verlatenkloof and Banksgate 4 × 4 Farms have exciting off-road routes as well as hiking and biking trails with ample lodging and beautiful scenery. Sterboom, Rye grass, Elephants feet and veld flowers are only some of the endangered species of flora to be found in this area.

Salpeterkop, the last active volcano south of the equator is to be found close to the observatory. It was active 66 million years ago. Seismologically the Japanese found that Sutherland and the surrounding area are now the quietest in the world!

On the farm Ezeljaht, 20 km out of town, one can enjoy a scenic two day hike, called the Silhouette Hiking trail.

Coming from Matjiesfontein, one has to drive the winding 15 km Verlatenkloof Pass climbing nearly a 1000 metres. It was designed by Thomas Bain, the son of the famous Bain who built the Bainskloof pass near Wellington.

Hotel Las Vegas, Paris

Paris, the city of love is beautified with a lot of natural and artificial beauties. Paris Las Vegas Hotel, a dream place to be at, is no exception at all. It is basically a casino and hotel situated on the famous Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, which is both operated and owned by Harrah's Entertainment. It consists of a half scale, 164.6m (540 feet) high replica of the gorgeous Eiffel Tower and neon sign in the size and shape of the Montgofier balloon, a La Fontaine des Mers replica and a two-third sized Arc de Triomphe. The building façade suggests the Louvre and the Paris Opera House.

Bally's Entertainment originally announced the project. For Paris Las Vegas Hotel, ground was broken on April 17, 1997. Catherine Deneuve, French Actress turned on all the lights of Paris by flipping a switch. The building's initial period was under Hilton Hotels. Bally Entertainment was purchased by Hiltons Hotel in 1996. Its casinos were consequently spun off. In 2000, Park Place Entertainment bought Caesars World and in 2004, modified its name to Caesars Entertainment. Then Hilton Hotels started the building, which was originally supposed to be called Paris Hilton, named after the daughter of Mr. Hilton and after that, it was changed to Paris Hotel and Casino. When it inaugurated, The hotel used to run hilarious television commercials all through the United States, which implies that, it had made sure the legitimacy of its reproductions of culture, cuisine and landmarks of Paris. When the replica of the Eiffel Tower was built, it was supposed to be a full scale model. But, as the airport was a bit too near, the model was not built as it was planned. US $785 million was needed to build Paris Las Vegas Hotel which occupies about 97,000 square meters.

The Paris Las Vegas Hotel, having a theme of Paris, has 2,916 rooms in total. It has a gaming space of 85000sq. ft. It has a permanent show named "The Producers". Its main attractions are Experiencing Eiffel Tower and Risque de Paris. It provides Desk, Air conditioning, In-room safe, Electronic door locks and many lavish facilities. The shopping has reached to a whole new level by the Las Vegas Hotel.

Paris Casino Las Vegas Hotel, comfortable and stylish place to lay bets, fulfilled with fountains, gigantic doorways with lights and a lush interior which is designed to make a person as relaxed as he/ she wants to. This is surely the ultimate place to pass some time if anyone wants to pass a late afternoon within the town.

Nakuru Kenya Budget accommodation: Nakuru cheap Luxury Hotels

Makalia Falls Public Campsite While it may be hard to get and have cruder facilities than Backpackers, this is the best place to camp in the park. It's picturesque and sits next to the seasonal Makalia Falls.

Backpackers Campers This large public campsite sits inside the main gate and also has the parks best camping facilities.

Special Campsites These are dotted all over the park and have no facilities, but offer true bush experience- just you and the animals

Wildlife Club of Kenya Guesthouse This place is great- facilities include hot showers, TV lounge and use of the Kitchens fridge, gas cooker and microwave. The rooms are clean and comfortable.

Wildlife Club of Kenya Youth Hostels This hostel is a nice, very friendly site with clean dorms, simple single rooms and two-bedded bandas, complete with cooking areas.

Eldorado Lodge Just outside the park's Lanet gate, this place is a viable option for camping if you roll up to closed park gates in the evening. The rooms are overpriced and the pool is a little too green for our liking.

Luxury top end accommodation hotels in Nakuru Kenya

Naishi House Banda
Sit on the shady terrace and watch the zebras and rhinos grazing on your very own doorstep – there are no fence here. This charming self- catering cottage is very comfortable, complete with lovely fireplace, sitting room and full kitchen. The annex was designed for safari drivers and is pretty basic. The parks main gate handles booking and payments.

Sarova Lion Hill

Sitting high up in the lake's eastern slopes, this lodge offers first class service and comfort. The views from the open-air restaurant/ bar and from most rooms are understated but pretty, while the flashy suites are large and absolutely stunning.

Lake Nakuru Lodge

South of the lake, this lodge's standard rooms, housed in cute shingle- roofed octagonal cottages, are a big step down in quality from those at Lion Hill. The only options worth the asking price are the new 'deluxe' rooms (make sure you ask for the ones that aren't in the farmhouse). The usual facilities are available, along with activities such as horse riding (Kshs 1550 per hour) and nature walks (Kshs 800).

GETTING THERE AND AWAY

Walking in the park isn't permitted, so you will have to rent a taxi, go on a tour or you will be lucky enough to hitch a ride. A taxi for a few hours will likely cost Ksh 2000, though you will have to bargain hard for it. More enjoyable options are the One World Tours & safaris who will charge Kshs 6000 for an open-topped eight-seat 4WD (about six hours), and Crater Travel who will organize three-seat jeeps for Kshs 4500( also for six hours).

If you are driving, there's access from the main gate, just outside Nakuru, the Lanet gate, a few kilometers south on Nairobi road, and the Nderit gate, near the southern end of the gate.

Hotels, Where Does The Name Come From?

Hotel, an organization which makes paid accommodation available, generally on a temporary basis. Hotels habitually provide numerous guest services, for example, a restaurant, a childcare or a swimming pool. A number of hotels contain meeting rooms and conference facilities and encourage people to arrange get-togethers and conventions at their own place. No rigid rule of differentiating hotels from other motels is there, though, a Motel clearly suggests that it is intended for motorists. It simply means that it is nothing but a hotel but with first-class access to the highway network. Characteristically, motel means a hotel, made suitable for inhabitants who, for no matter what private reason, wish not to be unable to have rapid right to use from the outer world to the rooms of the hotel without going by the receptionist's scrutiny or associate guests.

The word also refers to a bar or a pub in Australia. Even in the United Kingdom, many bars, having hotel in their names, do not provide lodging or foodstuff. In India, hotel refers to restaurant as the better restaurants were located near to good hotels. The word Hotel originated from a French word, hộtel. It refers to a French edition of a townhouse but not a building where accommodation is offered. Accommodating people in dedicated buildings has immense antiquity and people of various customs started practicing it. Hoshi Ryokan, a Japanese hotel, which was established in the year 717, is the oldest hotel of the world. Basic lodging of a room with no more than one bed, one cupboard, one small table and one washstand was substituted by modern rooms having en-suite bathrooms, telephones, a television, an alarm clock, broadband connection of internet etc. Drink and food are delivered by a mini bar. Mini-bar is a refrigerator which contains drinks and snacks, coffee and tea preparing facilities etc.

The quality and cost of hotels are normally indicative of the variety of services accessible. As tourism increased immensely all through the globe throughout the preceding decade, standards of the smaller establishment has developed by a huge margin now. Rating system is now brought in for greater comparability. Famous hotels of recent times are, Schloss Cecilienhof in Germany, Waldorf Astoria, Hotel Chelsea in USA, Singapore's Raffles Hotel, Hotel Sacher in Austria, Russia's Grand Hotel Europe, Ritz Hotel in UK etc.

Many hotels are termed as unusual hotels, such as, Treehouse hotels like Ariau Towers, Cave hotels like Desert cave hotel, Capsules hotels in Japan, Ice hotel in Sweden, Snow hotels like Mammut in Finland, Garden Hotels, Underwater hotels, Library hotel, Boat hotel etc. Dubai's Burj al-Arab, world's tallest hotel is 321 meters high. However, world's largest hotel is situated at Las Vegas and its name is MGM Grand Las Vegas. The oldest hotel, still operating, is the Hoshi Rokyan in Japan. A grouping or collection of hotels under an identifiable brand name, managed by an organization is called a hotel chain.

A hotel can be of from one star to seven stars. The only seven star hotel, dream of millions of people, is located at Dubai.
